In love with: subway tile

 

I’m a sucker for subway tile. I think it’s such a fresh way to decorate a room. I fell in love with the above picture when reading Daniela Schuffler’s blog, Aesthetic Oiseau. She has some great advice for buying glass subway tile, so make sure to check it out if you’re interested.

While I do want to focus more on subway tile as a back splash in a kitchen, I found this picture of subway tile in a shower and fell in love. The teal color is perfect for this shower.

 

Now for three kitchens that I’m currently drooling over. And they all have white cabinets for the win - you had me at hello. Exhibit A: the blue back splash kitchen.

Weekend inspiration: the bar

 

I’m visiting my gay husband and his boyfriend (what? it’s an open relationship haha) this weekend. Our email discussion of cocktails that we should mix has inspired me to delve into the important issue of home bars. Long gone are the days of red solo cups, cheap vodka, and ping pong balls lining your beer soaked bar. It’s time to class it up a bit. Lucky for you, it’s not difficult at all!

I want to focus on the bar above, featured in Refinery29. It belongs to Gap’s Director of Concept, Jane Herman, who created a piece to go over her ugly radiator. Now that is some creative space saver thinking!

The bar below belongs to Emily over at Cupcakes and Cashmere. She took this old rolling cart and made it into some amazing. I’m in love with the Los Angeles poster hanging above the bar - it really adds that personal touch.

 

Once again, Pottery Barn can do no wrong. The shelving above provides space on the cart for you to prep your drinks. Not to mention the fact that it gives you extra storage rooms to buy as many bottles as your heart desires.

If you have a little more money to spend then you can’t go wrong with a wine refrigerator. Add a tray on top for beautiful organization and you’re set. And I’m in love.

 

So what are you waiting for? Go organize your bar! And don’t forget to make a drink in the process - it is Friday, afterall.

The storing of the jewels

 

I admit it, I have a jewelry fetish. Necklaces are my drug. And I certainly don’t have a shortage of bracelets, earrings, and rings either. I’ve never been a huge fan of a traditional jewelry box, I like my jewelry to be out on display. Check out how I’ve made my jewelry a piece of art in my bedroom.

I use these colorful dishes for my earrings and rings. The purple bowl stores my thinner silver bracelets.

 

When I saw this funky orange dish at The Nest Egg in Fairfax, Virginia I knew that I had to have it. Even then orange was the dark horse and I didn’t even realize it! I love the color, the polka dots, and the gold trim. It’s just so fun.

 

I think that this tiny blue dish with a floral print contrasts perfectly with the orange dish. They work really well together and I love the flow on my dresser.

And for the piece de resistance, my necklaces.

 

The necklaces on the bottom are actually hanging on a tie rack that I bought at Bed Bath and Beyond. They keep all of my necklaces from getting all tangled up, and they’re really easy to see when I’m figuring out which necklaces will top off my outfit.

 

These necklaces are hanging on fancier hooks that I also bought from Bed Bath and Beyond. They were necessary as my necklace collection continued to grow. I’m getting a little worried, because we’re almost at capacity!

A short affair: West Elm pop-up shop in Georgetown

 

Today is the opening of West Elm’s pop-up shop in Georgetown. It will be a short affair for the Georgetown store, as it will only be open for 6 months. So if you’re local to DC, don’t wait to get in there!

 

So what is a pop-up shop? My best guess is based on the lease time frame and the size - at 3,300 square feet, the store is significantly smaller than a typical West Elm, which averages about 10,000 square feet. But that makes it that much cozier and fun to look around!

The store features a very eclectic variety of pieces, including a number of limited edition and “discovered” pieces. The shop will also carry items with small space and dorm living in mind, considering the close proximity to the local DC universities and colleges.

 

I know the design lab is somewhere I wouldn’t mind spending my time.

 

The store is partnering with New York artist Aakash Nihalani to create a tape installation in the store on opening day. Check it out - you won’t be disappointed.

I have a new crush these days - on the color orange. I have to admit that orange is never really a color that I think of, but that is definitely changing. Orange - the dark horse taking the lead.

Lush it up: wallpaper your cabinets

 

Wallpapering your cabinets is such an easy way to add some pizazz to what can be a pretty boring piece of furniture. Wallpaper comes in so many different designs - so have fun with it! This may be your chance to use something a little more daring then you would if you were wallpapering your entire wall.

 

This green geometric print brings some life to the white cabinet and white plates.

 

Don’t forget to have fun with it - here is a gray and white wallpaper with a turquoise accent, which is brought out by the paint of the cabinets. Now that’s some fun storage.
